365 Day Black and White Challenge - Day 30

Day 30 - 365 Day B&W Photo Challenge - Moment Lens Collection.

It’s been 30 days on this journey of capturing a black & white image everyday for 365 days. I wasn’t even sure I was going to make it past the first week of this challenge, since I caught the flu 3 days into the challenge. I did, however power through.

I think the biggest challenge for me is to expect an amazing image every day, but I’ve accepted the fact that there just won’t be a great image every day. It does challenge me to be creative every day and so that is one positive that has come from this challenge.

Looking through the view finder now I do see light differently and look for contrasts. I think my color work is also improving as I view the the world in front of me differently now. I’ve changed from metering entire scenes now to spot metering on my Fuji and it seems to be more precise in coming up with an image that I intended to take and less post processing to achieve the vision I had in the first place. Fuji jpgs are now my friend!

I’ve come to love the Acros R film simulation (Fuji Acros Film with a red filter). It’s now my favorite simulation. I’ve noticed that on the color side, I’m leaning away from the more saturated film simulations and will use the standard Provia or Classic Chrome film simulations now. I think this is a good thing and has made my color photography a little less saturated which is probably a good thing.

I’m really embracing shooting again with film. There is something so satisfying in advancing a film lever and manually focusing a camera to produce an image. I think the process of capturing black and white images has forced me to slow down and think about what I want to capture. Shooting film does the same thing and forces me to think about the image before I capture it. I’ve also come to like film grain. There is something about that analog grain that makes the image seem more natural and pleasing to the eye. This isn’t all the time, but I don’t automatically get rid of grain any more in post processing. Check out my latest post shooting Denver at Night with Cinestill 800T film stock.

I find that I must push myself to get out with a camera during the day and be more intentional. If I don’t then it gets to 8pm in the evening and I realize I must find something around the house to capture. I can only do so many cat photos (my daughter’s cats roam the house now). I do at some point, though want to do a self-portrait in B&W.

Ok that’s it for my first month’s summary. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
